Google Maps is our favourite navigation app on both Android and iOS, as it is not only accurate but also provides a seamless user experience, and now the developers at Google are making the overall experience even better.
Google Maps is adding two tiny features which can have a huge impact in the overall usability of the application.
Google has announced a Wi-Fi-only option for the Google Maps app for Android, which it had initiated testing last month, and it also included support for SD card data download from the app.
Now these additions are made keeping in mind the budget smartphone users who are on a tight data plans, and are using smartphones with a low internal space.
The Wi-Fi only option will be really helpful for travellers helping them save on roaming data charges.
Google had introduced the offline support for Maps long back which lets you download a specific location on your smartphone, so even if you don't have data, you cans still navigate across town without worrying about network and connectivity.
However this offline data takes up a big chunk of storage space, which isn't always existent on a budget smartphone. Most budget smartphones get 4GB-8GB of storage space, and after other apps consuming most of it, there isn't any left for Google Maps' offline data. Here's where SD card support for Google Maps comes in really helpful. Google mentions in its blogpost:
"Entry-level smartphones come with internal storage capacities as low as 4GB, while higher-end models range between 8GB and 32GB. For many of us, that's not enough for all the videos, music, apps, and photos we cram onto our beloved smartphones."
"To ensure that Google Maps users with any storage capacity can download and use offline areas when they need them most, we've added the ability to download your offline areas to an external SD card (if your device supports them) on Google Maps for Android. Now you'll never have to choose between snapping more food photos or the ability to navigate offline."
Google has recently updated its mapping applications with new, higher-resolution imagery from NASA's Landsat 8 satellite, which results in a much detailed and accurate imagery.
