It's a big day for Apple beta releases of its big operating systems, with both iOS 10 and macOS Sierra receiving new public betas, making this the fourth release to come out of Cupertino that is aimed squarely at members of the public who wish to get their hands on the latest software but aren't too concerned about the bugs and issues it might bring with it.
Coming on the same day that it released the fifth developer preview of the same software (iOS 10 beta 5 and macOS Sierra beta 5), these two new public betas are available via the usual methods; the Mac App Store for macOS Sierra and the Software Update portion of the Settings app on both the iPhone and the iPad, and are likely to be same exact builds coming out of two different testing branches.
As with any new beta release, public or otherwise, it's always worth doing your due diligence before updating.
While new releases, such as this one from today, generally include bug fixes and improvements to new functionality introduced in previous betas, Apple's beta updates have been known to muddy the waters in the past, with the company even having to remove a beta update from its servers once upon a time. Not all betas releases are better than the ones they replace, although iOS 10, in particular, has been one of the best beta releases by Apple in terms of stability and performance on day-to-day basis, at least that is what the general consensus is about it, and our own experience with it hasn't been any different.
Apple is expected to ship both iOS 10 and macOS Sierra at some point during September next month, with iOS 10 in particular strongly believed to be ready for a release alongside, or perhaps slightly prior to, the iPhone 7 going on sale.
New iPhone 7 handsets will very likely ship with iOS 10 pre-installed, so the update will be ready for those using older devices around the same time. Previous launches have also followed the same pattern, in fact.
With both iOS 10 and macOS Sierra closing in on a final release, the Apple TV and Apple Watch are both also moving towards a completed build that will be made available to the wider audience next month.
