If you enjoy making cocktails at home you likely have no trouble mixing up an Old Fashioned or a daiquiri when the mood strikes. But replicating the more unusual drinks now found in bars and restaurants is often a more daunting challenge. A recently released app, Modern Classics of the Cocktail Renaissance, is showcasing the new standards of the cocktail world, and its included recipes might be just the thing to take your home bartending to the next level.
Frequent customers of the city's now-numerous cocktail bars will likely spy some familiar Chicago creations. Local favorites featured in the app include Stephen Cole's Bitter Giuseppe, made with sweet vermouth, orange bitters, lemon peel and a healthy 2-ounce pour of Cynar, the herbaceous artichoke-based liqueur. This low-alcohol aperitif is a perfect drink to stir up at home before easing into a night on the town.
Another Chicago favorite included in the app is Brad Bolt's Hard Sell. This cocktail tames the city's beloved Jeppson's Malort by pairing it with gin, St.-Germain elderflower liqueur and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. The drink was a snap to shake up and tasted just like the many (on occasion, too many) I've had at West Town's Bar DeVille.
The app's well-curated collection of recipes was verified and annotated by Robert Simonson, author of "The Old-Fashioned: The Story of the World's First Classic Cocktail" and the upcoming "A Proper Drink," a book that chronicles the modern craft cocktail revival. Simonson will host a seminar Sunday at The Logan Theater called "The Making of a Modern Classic" as part of this weekend's Chicago Cocktail Summit.
Modern Classics was published by app designer Martin Doudoroff, and if you own any of his other cocktail apps (such as Beachbum Berry's Total Tiki or Shaken and Stirred), you'll be able to sync your home bar inventory across all the titles, allowing each app to show you which drinks you can make with just the ingredients you have on hand. It's a handy feature that will have home bartenders whipping up professional-quality cocktails in no time.
Modern Classics of the Cocktail Renaissance ($9.99) is available for iPhone and iPad users at the iOS App Store. Purchase tickets to Simonson's "The Making of a Modern Classic" seminar at www.cocktailsummit.com.
